THE SHORT STAY OF ASH GROUP 24.07 - 25.07.2002
Wednesday 24th of July On the afternoon arrived to Wroclaw Ash Group. They have visited the famous concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz - Birkenau in Oswiecim. This old Polish town became involuntarily the place of the biggest tragedy of people in the years of the IInd World War. The group was a little tired and hungry. After the dinner at hotel's restaurant our travel agency had exciting offer for the best pupils of Ash Group. Our minibus took them to the city centre. We are still unhappy, that our transit guests haven't possibility to see how beautiful is our town with its more than 100 bridges, and the same number of churches, and with one of the biggest town squares in Europe. The evening walking tour in the city centre was very interesting. The beautiful renovated buildings of Salt Square and The Town Hall Square with many pubs, clubs, restaurants invited young friends. They would like to visit one of these places - but it was to late, and they were to young for the night life at the Silesian capital town. So we lived Guinness Pub and John Bull Pub. Only short visit at coffee shop and everybody bought an ice-cream. The pupils liked it very much. The next point of program: night mini-coach trip through silent Cathedral Island with its beautiful churches Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew Church and monumental Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist. Our small group was impressed by illuminated towers of the churches and by gas street lamps with their willow-green light. Through Grunwaldzki suspension-bridge the pupils group came back to hotel. Maybe next time they will stay longer as one night only in our beautiful town. Thursday 25th of July The group was very good - said the lady from reception staff. Very gentle and easy. After breakfast-buffet at hotel's Restaurant depart to Berlin. For the drivers short instruction yet. On the way to Berlin you can visit very important place for British citiziens. 12 km only from the main high-way was during II World War famous Stalag Luft 3, POW Camp, where on March 1944 80 Royal Air Force Officers escaped through tunnel "Harry" of 100 m. length digged at a level 7-9 m. below the surface. The American movie "The Great Escape"with Steve Mc Queen and Charles Bronson have illustrated this famous historic act. According to Hitler's command 50 fugitives were shot by the Gestapo at different places with the helping hand of local members of the Criminal Police Force. The Museum in Zagan and cemetery with tombs of 50 victims of "Sagan command" still invites. We think, that each British young group should visit this place. If you want to know more about Camp Luft 3 and about "The Great Escape" visit please Museum's web site: http://free.polbox.pl/l/luftstal/index.htm Here you find more than 20 additional links!
